Summary

I strongly believe that entrepreneurial leaders are key to solving the 21st century challenges. However, more Empathy is needed to ensure diversity, involving people from different social and ethnic backgrounds. I define Empathy as the ability to understand or accurately predict the perspectives, fears, and dreams of others. From that understanding, a leader will identify the most urgent problem and take risks to solve it. The potential losses include the time invested, and resources devoted to change a product or way of thinking. The certain gain is that empathic leaders bring more than profit, as they are considerate with mankind and the environment.
Empathic communication is needed among all actors in society. Empathy is important among high-educated professionals, but also with, blue collar workers, costumers, and the public. The first and crucial step is for leaders to listen to their team and stakeholders.
I have the privilege of integrating the teachings I received during my education in Cuba, and in my Europe’s home-base. My book `Empathic Entrepreneurial Engineering’, explains my innovation method, based on Knowledge, Persuasiveness and Empathy, and how I founded two start-ups:
BuBclean est.2013, commercializing the product BuBble Bags for ultrasonic processes.
FlowBeams est.2021, developing a novel needle-free injection technology.
My impact focus areas are:
1) Educating about the beauty of innovation and its responsibilities.
2) Commercialization of scientific results while empowering young professionals.
My biggest ambition is to continue inspiring newer generations of scientists and entrepreneurs with less fortunate backgrounds and helping them reach their true potential.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

An empathic entrepreneurial leader is, by definition, a good listener. In my work, I understand the limitations of state-of-the-art technology after I empathize during conversations with the people who really need a better solution to their current situation. This needs to happen without judging or convincing the others about my personal opinion. The key is to let them talk and truly hear their experiences and honestly experience their emotions. Let me share a recent example:
Hope for people who need to inject medicine in their bodies is scarce. However, my work can help two main groups: people who fear needles, and those who need insulin. About 20% of the global population suffers from phobia to sharps, an enormous problem evidenced during Covid-19 pandemics vaccinations. The efforts of FlowBeams, my second company, are aimed at providing an injection with less environmental contamination. We will achieve it by reducing the packaging and logistics around needle-based injections. Without needles, many people will be more compliant with clinical treatments.
On the other hand, parents of small children and the young adults fighting Type I diabetes have it tough. To keep the disease under control involves constantly pricking their skin and injecting with needles the insulin they need to stay alive. Talking to them gave me valuable insight not available in the scientific journals or patents. Collaborating with the doctors and companies active in these biomedical areas has given me a unique opportunity to create the novel technological solution of needle-free injections my team is developing.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

Leave your ego behind and listen to others, allow yourself to be surprised: the potential for inspiration is immense. For example, my work related to laser-based technology for needle-free injections was featured by Reuters and World Economic Forum, in 2021. I was impressed by the number of likes, and direct messages with appreciation. The comments left under the video/interview, were enlightening and sometimes unexpected: “Great invention, I fear needles, but I am also afraid of lasers”. I now incorporated that concern in our injector design.
My advice to leaders, and those being led, is summarised in my framework for entrepreneurial engineering: Knowledge, Persuasiveness and Empathy, KPE. Stay acquiring expertise, gaining Knowledge, and do not stop interacting or Persuading others to collaborate. Make them feel comfortable to share their experiences. Empathise with the stakeholders of the problem you are solving, learn what really matters to them. It helps me to interact with students in the lab or classroom and talking to industrial collaborators. I work at the Erasmus MC Hospital by listening to patients who will (one day) benefit from my invention.
KPE works both ways: transfer your knowledge, allow yourself to be persuaded if someone’s idea is better. Share your concerns so that others can empathize with you. Lastly, empower your team members, by fostering environments where they can experiment, thrive on their strengths, and learn new skills. Giving them trust, your team members will gain self-awareness, and will become the leaders of the future!

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

My biggest ambition is to continue inspiring newer generations of scientists and entrepreneurs with less fortunate backgrounds to help them reach their true potential.
The most visible impact of my approach is the Future Under Our Skin, an international stakeholder network I kickstarted in 2019, which has evolved into an academic-to-user network of scientists, dermatologists, cosmeticians, tattoo artists, and patient organizations.

My most urgent dream is to see my deep-tech innovation on needle-free injection adopted by the market in less than three years. For that, the first goal is to get a big subsidy for my FlowBeams company this year. That financing will enable me to reduce two or three days of my official appointment as professor at the university. In doing so, I want to demonstrate my commitment to the technology and dedicate the right energy and focus to develop our prototypes and products. I expect that such level of engagement will convince potential investors and partners that I am the appropriate leader to deploy such promising technology in society.

Our world is in desperate need for diverse solutions to the many problems we face as humans. I strongly believe that multidisciplinary teams, led by empathic entrepreneurial leaders, have the biggest chance of contributing positively to the long list of challenges we face. And I am determined to be part of that global effort, as teacher, academician, scientist, and entrepreneurial leader.
