Summary

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is an international joint venture university founded by Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool. As an independent Sino-foreign cooperative university, it embodies both prestigious parent universities, and is the largest joint-venture university approved by the Ministry of Education in China.
XJTLU offers approximately 100 degrees programs in fields of science, engineering, business, finance, architecture, urban planning, language, culture, and all are taught in English, except for general and basic courses. Undergraduate students earn two degrees: an XJTLU degree from the Chinese Ministry of Education and a globally recognized degree from the University of Liverpool. Postgraduate students receive a University of Liverpool degree that is recognized by the Ministry of Education. All academic departments at XJTLU offer PhD opportunities, towards XJTLU’s vision of “becoming a research-led international university in China and a Chinese university recognized internationally for its unique features.”
The Entrepreneur College is a brand-new campus-based approach to entrepreneurship, opened in September 2022. Located in Taicang, just north of Shanghai, it features award-winning architecture, where 7 technology schools are connected by the Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Hub (EEH). The campus is surrounded by China’s regional equivalent of Silicon Valley; a hub for global innovation, housing a large cluster of Fortune 500 companies, transnational enterprises and technology R&D centres, ideal conditions for EEH students to develop outstanding ventures. Government and industry have industry invested the equivalent of $20bilion USD to foster this unique ecosystem, to ensure it becomes the reference for entrepreneurship 4.0 and industry 5.0.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

Three students at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University are hoping to inspire the next generation of electrical and electronic engineers with their educational products company.
TREEE Science & Technology Co., Ltd was established in December 2015 by Hengyang Luo, a recently graduated electrical and electronic engineering masters student, Fei Cheng, a PhD student in the Department Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Dewang Guo, who studies BSc Information Management and Information Systems.
The three were brought together by their shared love of ‘maker culture’, a subculture related to DIY and hacker culture that encourages the modification and the creation of devices, making use of technologies such as robotics and 3D printing.

Their company currently produces circuit boards that can be used for practicing electrical and electronic engineering skills such as attaching chips, soldering and making circuits. They also produce component parts for ‘smart cars’, model cars that use sensors to navigate without human control.
TREEE also offered supervision and technical support to XJTLU students at a recent smart car competition in Nanjing.
Despite the hard work needed to establish a successful company, the three offer words of encouragement to other students thinking of starting their own business:
• “If you have a good idea, and some skills, you should have a try,” said Fei.
• “Don’t be afraid of failure,” said Hengyang.
• “It’s time to do something cool!” said Dewang.
TREEE’s products are available to purchase from the company's website.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

Many people dream of pursuing a fresh start in a new field, but not everyone will take steps to make that dream come true.
Adrian Heng Hwa Onn, a Year Two student in BEng Data Science and Big Data Technology with Contemporary Entrepreneurialism, shares with us his story – why he decided to pursue an additional degree in China, and what his learning experience at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University Entrepreneur College (Taicang) has been like so far.
Onn is from Selangor, Malaysia. He received his first degree, BSc Mathematics, at the University of Edinburgh.
“China is an economic and technological superpower, and big data industry has a bright future. I wanted to study a forward-looking subject in one of the most dynamic countries in the world.
Onn still recalls his first visit to XJTLU. “I was impressed with the architecture and well-equipped facilities. The campus is gorgeous. I like the library and its modern design.”
XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) overview rendering
At the College, seven U-shaped buildings for industry-themed schools connect to a ring-shaped structure. The magnet shapes symbolise a welcoming attitude of connection to the wider world. Landscape elements including water features and green areas make the space inside the ring usable and attractive. The architecture design also won a bronze award in the Future Projects: Education category at the 2021 World Architecture News (WAN) awards.
Onn says: “People don’t really have many chances to be part of something new, and I think Taicang is something to be excited about.”

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

As well as new pathways for our MSc. Entrepreneurship & Innovation in Strategic Management and Robotics, this year will see the launch of our Summer Nexus customisable “short course” provision, which allows interested parties to customise slices of activity from across the Entrepreneur College for national and international students to come and visit the Taicang campus for two weeks.

We will also be holding our annual Global Entrepreneurial Dream-Chaser competition for the third year, which is open for submissions until September – (where all you need is a big idea to change the world, which involves technology to be eligible to compete). We will also be launching new virtual and physical campus spaces, including a peer-assisted-venture-environment (PAVE) data lab, our X3 Co-Venture start-up space for student spin-ups and our own entrepreneurial metaverse space, featuring a digital twin of our campus – as an open air (digital) exhibition and festival-style conference space. On top of that we will be launching our Centre for Social Entrepreneurship.

The circle in the blueprint represents XJTLU’s core business, and the dotted lines represent the impact we could have on social education.
By implementing this model, we expect students, whether they become entrepreneurs or not, not only acquire skills and method, but also discover their authentic self and get ready for a world that is full of new opportunities.
