Summary

Jason E. Lemon, PhD, possesses a unique blend of leadership, pedagogical, and interpersonal skills that have helped him develop a strong, innovative and strategic vision for UC Online -- creating learning pathways for students and helping students achieve academic success. The organizations, frameworks, systems, and processes that Jason has developed and implemented during his career in the online education sector have created educational opportunities for tens of thousands of students and their families. He’s an educational entrepreneur who has been able to identify opportunities and organize the resources and talents available to make the most of those situations – all with the goal of increasing access to education and creating a brighter future. Under Jason’s leadership UC Online has seen increases in online program offerings from 14 to 115 degrees and certificates. Student enrollments have increased from 5,800 to 7,765 which is a compounding annual growth rate of 7.5%. Underrepresented minority students participating in online programs are nearly twice as likely to be in his online programs than in on-campus programs. Jason stands on the belief that every person who enrolls in one of his online programs, or who works within his organizations, has an opportunity to increase their own value by learning and doing things that they haven’t learned or done before. This focus on appreciating value – in terms of being grateful for those skills and talents as well as enhancing, growing, and increasing their value – has been the core principle guiding his efforts to lead students, staff, and faculty.

Acknowledgements

Thanks to Governer Mike DeWine for continued financial support of higher education in the state of Ohio during times of difficult budget realities and competing priorities.

Thanks to the Ohio Department of Higher Education – especially for their support with the Finish for Your Future grant which provided direct funding for dozens of high-need students to begin a higher education journey and laid the groundwork for an even larger impact as hundreds of University of Cincinnati faculty members learned how to develop, build, and teach online courses that embraced the different learning needs and profiles of online, non-traditional, working, professional, adult students.

The University of Cincinnati for having the foresight to understand the changing landscape of online education and move away from vendors and contractors to create the internal capacity for online marketing, recruiting, student retention, and instructional design with the establishment of UC Online.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

Ana’s story of survival and perseverance is the kind of impact story that keep UC Online moving, growing, and working towards our goal of providing access to education for non-traditional adult learners. Ana wasn’t sure she would live to see adulthood. Her escape from Cuba to Florida’s shores and the United States was nothing less than a miracle. As a mom and working professional, UC’s online Bachelor of Social Work program enabled her to get a college degree, something she wasn’t sure was even possible as a child. As a social worker she looks forward to someday finding the opportunity to return to Cuba and help others there. Her educational achievements through online learning have opened the doors to opportunities she could not even imagine and never would have had otherwise. This amazing story is just one of the thousands from students who, like Ana, have found a future hope and an ability to succeed and give back to society by completing their education through UC Online. Below is a link to Ana’s story – please watch it.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

The most valuable entrepreneurial characteristics that I have learned are to: 1) look at the circumstances, situations, or environments that are around all of us, and see opportunities where others might see chaos or nothing at all, and then 2) organize resources to bring those opportunities into reality, and 3) communicate a vision about the opportunities that will create engagement from investors, employees, and other participants to build success with the opportunity. As I worked in the university environment, I realized that I possessed these abilities, and that I could apply them to my passion for online education.
Perhaps the biggest impact I’ve had in online higher education has been to increase access for underrepresented minorities and young leaders as they pursued higher education opportunities. For example, over the last five years at the University of Cincinnati our online degree programs have attracted and enrolled underrepresented minorities at a rate 1.5 to 2 times higher than the on-campus programs. This translates to thousands more minority students participating in university programs than before these online programs existed! We have been successful at making the online programs accessible by clearly communicating the opportunity, professional fit, support services, and personalized caring interactions that students can expect. Those who choose to enroll with UC Online are doing so because they feel included, supported, and hopeful about their own futures and the educational opportunities they discover at UC.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

Part of our strategic mission is to continue to expand access to higher education. In our future plans we will continue our efforts to increase access to UC’s online degree and certificate programs. With ongoing support, UC Online’s goal of providing online program access to a steady state enrollment of 10,000 students is anticipated to be accomplished two years earlier than planned. Specifically, we work to maintain our vision and reach our goals through partnerships and collaborations, inside and outside the university. Our solid and transparent operations, and our evaluation practices will continue to build trust and predictability for our partners seeking positive outcomes for their programs, students, and employees. Because of this success, and with our commitment to launch more new online programs that serve diverse audiences of students, we will continue to grow in programs offered, program enrollment, and college and community partnerships. Online students will continue to be attracted to UC Online’s programs because they will continue to feel a connection and a sense of belonging through the caring, personalized interactions that the UC Online faculty, staff, and student communities share with those who inquire and apply to the university’s online programs. These community connections will also provide the bonds that encourage the persistence and achievement that will support student success and graduation.
