Summary

The Sage doll avatar can change the world of education! That is the philosophy behind We Are All the Same InsideĀ®, an award-winning books and grass-roots educational initiative created to help learners embrace our common humanity, explore the various aspects of diversity and even enhance part of a five-year reseach study hightlighting the importance of STEAM.

The fact that a school or community might have diversity policies does not necessarily engender acceptance or tear down walls of prejudice. As a society, we aspire to valuing and respecting people of different cultural backgrounds yet intolerance, scapegoating, and lack of acceptance are still widespread. According to a 2021 Boston Globe interview with renowned Harvard University psychologist Mahzarin Banaji, children as young as three-years-old have the ability to accept and embrace racism. Therefore, it is critical that children learn how to understand and respect individuals who might appear different from them, and for children's parents and older siblings to reinforce those values beyond the classroom or playground.

Acknowledgements

Beyond grateful that several non-profit organizations have previously supported my work, including the Sesame Workshop, Mattie J P Stepanek Foundation, Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, We Are Family Foundation, Anti-Defamation League, and the New York City Department of Education, who awarded me a contract to bring We Are All the Same Inside to schools throughout all five boroughs of New York City. Recently, I received a Smithsonian Artist in residence space grant while the Harvard Club of New York named me "Outstanding Educator of the Year." Sage dolls / avatar have also accompanied me on presentations I've given at the United Nations and have been used as educational tools everywhere from Sierra Leone to Sydney, Australia. They were recently highlighted at the 36th Annual Black Doll Show in Greater Los Angeles and are a integral part of a research study through 2024 teaching mathematics, music and computational thinking.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

The impact of this workshop is best explained in this recent podcast that was released recently through Touro University where I am an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Education.

In this podcast:

I explained many challenges of the past 23 years arts an arts educator / entrepenuer leader / in fully engaging a participant that wanted to wished to create an Sage doll / avatar. I had to rethink and revamp the workshop to meet their needs and meet their strengths. So I bought puffy paint where she could feel the surface and with my assistance direct where she wanted the paint her Sage doll / avatar. This amazing story and my travels to Sierra Leone where I volunteered to create Sage dolls / avatars in several schools in French were peak experiences as well as working within the recent Education Innovation Research on STEM

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

As a social studies and arts instructor, I have helped enage students and teaching candidates alike how to intergrate the arts into their future elementary curricula. Primarily, I use my Sage dolls and avatars in workshps ranging from social emotional to STEM as a teaching tool to demonstrate the power of the arts in teaching to all learners and partciulary neurdiverse learners in becoming enaged and excited about their studies and the content they need to excel in this ever changing global world. The Sage doll / avatar was invented to help students what they have in common. We are all learners and I believe that art education should have meaning even in the college and university lecture halls.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

Upon my acceptance and / or being informed of being the Triple E finalist, the Sage doll-making worshop AKA We Are All the Same Inside will be onstage, animated and / or presented even virtually where children will help tell Sage's story, accompanied by life-size puppets and / or Sage avatars that they create on site or even at home. I have chosen this goal because of its proximity to a culturally and socio-economically diverse community. This project would help provide access to as many participants as possible and ensure that a commensurate number of materials are available to create dolls, avatars and puppets. Most importantly, it would underscore how educating children about diversity at a young age is a potent remedy to counteract indifference and promotote acceptance.
