Summary

Rafael Ventura, is an academic from the University of Malaga (UMA) with a large experience teaching, researching and transferring knowledge to the society and ecosystem. He got the Spin-Off Award of UMA in 1997. It was the beginning of his interest on entrepreneurship. Since 2004, he has held various leading management positions at the University, always related to entrepreneurship. Currently, he is in charge of the entrepreneurial policy at the University of Malaga as Vice-President for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Based on his leadership, the University of Malaga got the accreditation as Entrepreneurial University by ACEEU in 2021.
His main motivation is the desire to produce changes both in the University and the Society. But above all, he recognizes that the best result is the impact on people. In this sense, he understands the University as an “Accelerator of people”.
He has led the design and execution of Link By UMA, LBU, the Hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship of UMA. LBU is conceived as a connector between the University and the innovative and entrepreneurial Ecosystem. Nowadays, LBU centralizes the entrepreneurial activity of the University providing a unique collaborative environment.
Rafael Ventura can be recognized as a boundary spanner because of his background and current position in the innovative Ecosystem. The multiple programs he has carried out with entities outside UMA have led to the acquisition of an extensive network of contacts, knowledge on the business reality and the establishment of links with the business world based on trust, commitment and fluid communication.

Acknowledgements

I have had the privilege of meeting many brilliant people, many excellent companies, many wonderful experiences. I have enjoyed being an intrapreneur within the University having the opportunity of running high impact programs.

I am especially proud of the impact of my work on:
• My University, being the first Spanish Higher Education Institution recognized as Entrepreneurial University by ACEEU..
• Students and academics, in pursuit of the objective of providing them with the best possible university to be entrepreneurs.
• The Ecosystem, facilitating a right environment to design, create and promote University-Ecosystem connections.
• The specialized literature, both as an academic, doing researchings focused on Entrepreneurial University, and as a manager putting into practice the results and knowledge developed. The work done at the University-Ecosystem level has also been analyzed as a case study internationally; both at the individual level, considering the work as a leader and the managerial impact, and at the project level, with focus on the model, activities and outcomes of Link By UMA.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

“Accelerating people” is an inspiring phrase that takes on special meaning when there are recognizable stories of people whose lives have been changed by Link By UMA. It would be possible to refer to many people. Three examples are mentioned.

Ana Rodriguez currently leads a startup accelerator in the city and plays a key role in Malaga's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

“Doing my internship at Link By UMA was the best election of my life. I discovered the startup world, got the opportunity of joining a startup as CMO and currently I am able to share my experience leading an accelerator space helping new entrepreneurs to growth.”.

Matías Canales is the CEO of Biofy, a startup in the energy industry.

“I was just another engineering student, not well skilled to work in a team or face an audience. Thanks to my experience at Link By UMA I have been able to create my start-up Biofy, winning numerous awards, and currently I represent my country in international committees on energy change”.

Sofía Martínez is PhD candidate at the University of Málaga, focusing her research on Entrepreneurial University.

”I met Link By UMA thanks to an internship in entrepreneurship. I fell in love with the concept of university Link represents, a university more open to society, with greater impact, a true Entrepreneurial University. I entered the world of research and I wanted to continue being part of this beautiful project and also to do research about it”

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

The main learning is the importance of the strategic approach in the development of an Entrepreneurial University model. It is very important to specify the answers to four very basic questions: Why, How, What and to/with Whom.

Why you want to be an Entrepreneurial University can have many valid answers, but it is good to choose one that is inspiring, even if it is not the only one. In my case, I focused on the purpose of generating entrepreneurial human capital for the Ecosystem. This idea allows the design of the answers for the remaining questions.

Regarding How, we have created a collaborative model based on the concept of open university to add and combine resources from all the actors of the Ecosystem.

What you have to do to generate entrepreneurial human capital is a simple question to answer from the analysis of the needs to be covered. You have to be creative and innovative developing programs and services.

Finally, regarding the answer of to/with Whom, is mandatory to map the Ecosystem to find opportunities for collaboration and valuable co-creation relationships.

Another lesson learned is that the introduction of changes in the University directly affects the context in which the collaboration between university and business take place, and has an immediate effect on the actor’s disposition to collaborate with the University's entrepreneurship strategy. The permeability of the University and the design of new linkages is a critical task to facilitate the co-creation of new value.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

Leaving the comfort zone should be the maxim to follow for personal growth. This means that tolerance to change and taking risks must be key competences to improve.

I understand that these competences must also include the ability to perceive when projects are amortized from a personal point of view, the identification of new opportunities and the recharge of enthusiasm and motivation in new projects.

After eight years leading Link By UMA, as Vice-President for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship the time to face new projects is coming.

In the next future it will change What to do and How to do it, even with Whom. However, it is important to preserve the Why. In this sense, future projects will always be aligned with my desire to work with innovative entrepreneurial people and involved in projects to make social changes.

The future will have to do with my experience and positioning in:
• The University system, because of my experience in management and research.
• The entrepreneurial Ecosystem, due to my experience as a Boundary Sspanner.
• International networks, because of my experience as a partner and leader of international projects.

I always believe in the future.
