Summary

I strongly believe that good leaders are as important as good entrepreneurs. However, not all entrepreneurs are known to have the best societal impact. The world we live in is constantly changing, and courageous entrepreneurial leaders must ensure that future generations are equipped with right skills to utilise their full potential.

As a female leader, I have noticed along my professional trajectory that there are not many women in leading roles. I believe that together, women and men, we can change this situation. I have experienced that inclusive teams, comprising different backgrounds, genders, and disciplines, have greater and positive entrepreneurial impact in society. It is in our leader’s and educators’ role to inspire, develop, and assist those who are willing to engage and demonstrate their motivation in making this world a better place.

Next to that, we need to change the way that entrepreneurial activities are evaluated by society, which should not be reduced to profit or self-interest. It is in this direction that I continuously strive to grow, develop, and reach my goals. My professional trajectory has led me to the two main leadership roles I hold today: 1) Team lead Business Development at Novel-T, where I help others to bring their innovations to the market, and 2) Entrepreneur, leading two academic spinoff companies from the University of Twente: FlowBeams and BuBclean.

Receiving the recognition as Female Leader of the Year will help me fortify my efforts and inspire other females to step up and become leaders themselves.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, we had to face a new reality. Every person experienced a different set of challenges, and in my case, I had two impacting experiences. My second son was born, and not long later, my mother passed away after a short fight against cancer. Since she was in a different country, I could not be there, neither she had a chance to meet her youngest grandson. I decided then to honor my mother’s teachings and redoubled my work efforts, balancing my family’s responsibilities. Thus, I can see in retrospective how productive this last period has been, and I elaborate in what follows.

During the pandemics I could empathies with the entrepreneurs I was guiding. I experienced that, if being an entrepreneur in normal times is tough, during pandemics is tougher for most of us. Some start-ups struggled with family or migration situations, ensuring the financial survival of their company, or simply unable to network due to lockdown restrictions.

It is through motivation, creativity and great efforts of the University of Twente and Novel-T that we managed in these rough times to find new ways to engage, inspire and educate young students - focusing both on their leadership and entrepreneurial skills (e.g UT Challenge 2021).

For my two companies the biggest challenge has been growing the team. It has been difficult to build trust as interaction were limited due to lockdowns and social distancing. However, using empathy we managed to make new meaningful connections.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

Throughout my life I have been fortunate to learn from great leaders in both the personal and professional spheres. These interactions have allowed me to grow and develop my own understanding of leadership. Among some of my key learnings are:

Firstly, effective leaders understand the importance of communication. Communication skills are crucial in every aspect of leadership. Whether it's delivering clear instructions or providing constructive feedback, the ability to communicate effectively is essential. Leaders should aim to be clear, concise and empathetic in their communication style.
Secondly, courageous leaders are always learning. They understand that personal and professional growth is a lifelong process. Continuous learning and development help leaders stay ahead of the curve, keep up with changing trends, and develop new skills to tackle challenges. I have learned valuable lessons in that aspect through two pivoting points in my life: 1) escaping with my family a war zone and 2) deciding to study abroad as a young adult.

Thirdly, leaders should focus on building strong relationships with their team members. Leaders who care for their team members, listen to their concerns and ideas, and provide support and guidance when needed, create a positive work environment that fosters creativity, productivity, and success.

Finally, successful leaders understand that mistakes are part of the learning process. Leaders who are not afraid to admit their mistakes and take corrective action, create an environment that encourages experimentation, innovation, and risk-taking.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

Novel-T aims at helping 100.000 entrepreneurs to develop their ideas by 2023. Such ambition requires hard teamwork every day. As leader, my focus is on empowering and guiding my Business Development team in providing our expertise through various programs, events and 1-on-1 sessions to each entrepreneurial idea.

Among those programs, imec.istart.nl has been selected among the three best international acceleration programs according to UBI Global. I am excited to know if we will be number one in May 2023. In this program, I am Venture Acceleration Manager as part of a team that decides on investments of more than 11 million euros in tech-start-ups led by driven entrepreneurs.

As for my own companies, with BuBclean, we are working on scaling-up, hiring new personnel and growing sales. In FlowBeams our next goal is securing additional funding for commercialization and bringing our first technological application to the market.
