Summary

My mission is to support the development of the social economy and social entrepreneurship in Slovakia, especially through university and lifelong learning, counselling, networking, sharing my expertise, conducting research and producing publications. I designed and teach a course Social Economics and Social Economy and Social Entrepreneurship. Students create business plans for a social enterprise with social impact, participate in field trips and finally defend their projects at a "start-up pitching" event. It is an interdisciplinary topic, we involve many stakeholders in the classroom. I am an expert guarantor, creator and the lecturers of the lifelong learning course "Municipal Social Entrepreneurship" and the training program "Counseling for young people in the field of job placement - training for youth workers". I am a creator of the training course for non-profit organizations "Academy of Social Entrepreneurship". I am a co-author of Slovak Law No. 112/2018 on Social Economy and Social Enterprises. I am an expert of the national project Institute of Social Economy and the transnational project "Social Innovation Plus - Competence Centres". I am involved in several national and international projects that have been and are focused on social economy and social entrepreneurship. Every year we organise a workshop or conference on social economy and social entrepreneurship, in order to exchange experiences and to network social entrepreneurs and social economy supporters. I conduct webinars for high school students on social entrepreneurship and I am a member of the jury of the international education and incubation program "Social Impact Award Slovakia".

Acknowledgements

Thank you to the biggest supporters in my professional career, Professor of Economics Gabriela Korimová at the University of Matej Bel in Banská Bystrica - now retired. During my professional growth from the very beginning (from the time of my PhD studies) she was my mentor and passed on her advice, experience and involved me in activities that helped me to profile myself on the topic of social economy and social entrepreneurship. Without the support of the management of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Economics, I would not have achieved my successes, because they are supporters of innovative ideas and provide opportunities for the development of new disciplines at our university. I would especially like to highlight the attitude of Prof. Erika Pastoráková, Dean of the Faculty, who creates a favourable and supportive environment for creative activity and is open to innovative ideas. I consider the greatest professional recognition to be the fact that I was able to be part of the working group for the creation of a comprehensive law on social economy and social enterprises. I would like to thank the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic for this opportunity. I especially thank Ingrid Ujváriová, the director of the Department for Social Economy, for the opportunity to cooperate with the decision-making sphere in the development of the concept of social economy and social entrepreneurship in Slovakia.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

I have been working on the topic of social economy and social entrepreneurship since 2006. It was a little known area in Slovakia, so from the beginning I had to overcome obstacles in the development of this discipline. The situation has improved, but even today I still face misunderstanding and lack of recognition. The most difficult task is to change the mindset of peoples so that all our activities and economic decisions also take into account their social impact. It is in this spirit that I pursue my activities in all directions. I consider the networking of those interested in this topic, which we have initiated at our university, to be a key milestone in the development of economy and social entrepreneurship. Through the synergy of our activities, learning courses, projects, partnerships, collaborations, publications were created and implemented. It was a great recognition that I was invited to be part of the working group to contribute to the development of a comprehensive law on social economy and social enterprises. Professional recognition of my activities gradually led to offers for further cooperation. The social impact of these activities is continuously growing. Graduates of the courses acquire innovative thinking by combining social responsibility and financial sustainability, some start social enterprises or work in them as managers. Members of our community are strengthening and gradually creating an ecosystem for the successful development of the social economy and social entrepreneurship in Slovakia. I believe that we are changing our society for the better.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

My first major achievement was the creation of the Social Entrepreneurship course in 2011 and the publication of a book on the subject. Today, we teach this topic in two courses. The content of the subject is how to do business with a view to positive social change, identifying local issues and challenges that we turn into business opportunities. Given that the theme of the course is interdisciplinary, I have gradually developed collaborations with experts from different fields and with stakeholders. And I see this as a key moment for development. I have gradually implemented innovative elements into the teaching process. I invite social entrepreneurs, representatives of institutions to lectures; I organize excursions for students; students work in teams on business plans; the exam consists of presenting the business plan in form of start-up pitching; students can present their business plans in workshops. Interdisciplinarity is also evident in teaching topics that are closely related to social entrepreneurship, e.g. social management, impact finance (investing), social agriculture, circular economy, regional and local development, social housing. I continuously innovate the course syllabi by incorporating the results of our research. I follow the recommendations of prof. Muhammad Yunus, the founder of Grameen Bank: "be stubborn if you believe in what you are doing....and listen to people who talk about things that you can use to improve". I associate with those who want and are looking for a solution, not a reason for inaction. That is the key to success.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

The strategic plan for the future is to create a new bachelor's degree programme that will be professionally oriented and focused on social management. Its aim will be to prepare graduates for the labour market who will be able to apply the principles of social management as a way of managing people and processes in relation to financial sustainability, environmental and social-solidarity responsibility. Our ambition is to educate young people who, in their daily decisions, will take into account the principles of social responsibility, ESG strategies and the contribution of their activities to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It should be an inclusive curriculum that would provide mentorship for disadvantaged job seekers to better cope with the challenges of education.
