The Lasallian Social Enterprise for Economic Development (LSEED) was originally a component of a social engagement program and an effort to help localize the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals under the Center for Social Concern and Action of De La Salle University. It started with a fellowship program where students and community partners work together in creating and building social enterprises, responding to societal issues related to social, economic, and environmental issues. After the successful implementation of the fellowship, new interventions were created and these are more focused on recalibrating the social engagement efforts of student organizations, integration of social entrepreneurship into the curriculum (senior high school to college), and inclusion in the research agenda of the university. From there, more internal and external stakeholders have become involved which led to the expansion of efforts on internationalization (ASEAN+3), national advocacy (MSMED, PRESENT, NASEEA), and volunteer programs.
To date, LSEED is now the flagship unit of De La Salle University in areas of social entrepreneurship and social innovation. The Center now implements a total of 10 major programs and 35 initiatives local and international on three major thrusts namely social engagement, research, and academic. In 2019, LSEED was recognised as 1st runner up in Academic Leadership in Social Innovation (Asia Pacific) by In_Pact Asia. The award is given to recognise educational institutions for cultivating students and faculty in generating ideas to design and implement greater methods and spaces for addressing social challenges in the development and diffusion of social innovation.
