Summary

The NOVA Impact office created the NOVA ImpACT! Challenges during the COVID-19 outbreak, to contribute to help society in solving some of the most prominent problems at the time, while also engaging with students and creating some sense of co-creation community. After the critical COVID-19 period, we assessed the impact of this program and realized it was worth to continue and to broaden its scope of action.
The NOVA ImpACT! Challenges is currently a three-week acceleration program that runs once a year, where students, researchers and the overall NOVA community, are invited to apply and develop solutions that address real problems, focusing on, at least, one Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
This program offers an initial budget of 500€ to the 10 selected teams that work during three intensive weeks with the support of mentors, workshops, and NOVA resources to prototype their projects and pitch it in a DEMO Day to a selected jury. The best team wins an additional prize of 2.000€ to continue developing the project. We believe this budget works as risk-free learning experience that enhances the potential of creating more innovative projects.
This is an online program to allow teams to be as multidisciplinary and diverse as possible while bringing together the teams in-person in the DEMO Day and some mentoring sessions to foster personal relations and networking moments.

NOVA University is a people centred University, focused on creating value to the society. We understand the power of close partnerships and collaborations to create impact.
We count more than 600+ protocols but would like to highlight some of them:
Santander Universities, who constantly maintains a strong commitment to inclusion and education, entrepreneurship, and employment, by granting scholarships, including social support grants, the acquisition of transversal and digital practices, dedicated to students but also to teachers, researchers, and entrepreneurs.
NOVA Mentors Network, a pool of several Mentors with expertise in all areas of knowledge that dedicate some of their time in a pro-bono format to give back to the University their knowledge, time, and experience. Our programs and events are largely enriched by their participation and engagement.
Our protocols with different Venture Capital partners such as Indico Capital Partners, Armilar Ventures, Bionova Capital or Portugal Ventures. Our partners in different programs support the community with mentoring, inspirational talks, and access to funds.
Our remarkable innovation hubs from our schools, who do an extraordinary job in promoting the entrepreneurial mindset and empowering a thriving technology ecosystem in each school:
The Haddad Entrepreneurship Institute and the Leadership for Impact Knowledge Center from Nova SBE, The NOVA Innovation and Analytics Lab from NOVA IMS, the NOVA TechShip from School of Sciences and Technology, the FCSH Innovation Centre from NOVA Social and Human Sciences School, among several others.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

This initiative had a significant impact in the generation of solutions and teams that continue their projects after the program:
eBreathie: a smart inhaler that helps asthma patients to better manage their disease and improve their quality of life. This team participated in the first edition (2020) and, since then, the team won the Glintt award in the category Start-up Innovation and the Start-up Competition from NOVA University which took them to the STAGE TWO (an international competition for the best University generated Start-ups) and recently participated in Web Summit. This project focuses on SDG 8.
O cientista regressa à Escola is a project inspired by the Native Scientists with focus in Portugal and has the mission to take Scientists to their primary school to promote scientific workshops and scientific education. This project participated in the 2021 edition and currently continues to build a network of Portuguese scientists. This project focuses on SDG 4.
Windcredible is producing micro–wind generators, idealized for urban, industrial, and rural applications to produce reliable and clean energy by capturing the wind. This project participated in the 2022 edition and later participated in the Web Summit. This project focuses on SDGs 7, 11, and 13.
Mellody is a blockchain powered gamification platform that allows all artists to compete and get rewarded on the process. It was one of the winners of the 2022 edition and participated in the Web Summit in the same year. This project focuses on SDGs 9 and 10.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

NOVA is the youngest public University in the Lisbon area ranking top 9 in QS World University Rankings 2022 among Young European Universities. Although young, we have been consistently working to be more competitive, in the front edge of innovation, whilst trying to promote more impactful and aligned with the UN agendas to create value.
NOVA is fully committed, across its nine Schools, to promote a knowledge-based and high-impact value creation activity by rooting an entrepreneurial culture within its community and through collaborations with industry and society. To set up this initiative we have worked out our own funds and staff to launch this initiative. This was also possible due to the support of the NOVA Impact Mentor’s Network that engaged with the teams and provide their knowledge and advice throughout the program.
On the second edition and due to the outstanding results, we were able to capture a sponsor that wanted to be part and help boost the program. Santander Foundation is our partner in the NOVA impACT! Challenges supporting in the implementation, awards, and evaluation of the teams, so these initiatives have more chance of success when we also have external stakeholder wanting to be involved and to participate in the value creation process.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

NOVA University is part of the EUTOPIA Alliance (EUTOPIA European University) which brings together Ten European Universities aiming to become, by 2030, an open, multicultural, sustainable, responsible, ethically connected campuses. As such, we want to take the NOVA impACT! Challenges initiative to a different level. We aim to make this initiative broader by engaging with the different Universities of the Alliance but also to take advantage of the created ecosystem which has several stakeholders involved that have already identified and mapped some of the most prominent problems that need to be solved and where Universities can play an important role by being the knowledge generation centres. We aim to leverage a program where co-creation comes from different people, from different countries with different levels of development but also with different experiences and technology readiness levels to solve the problems.
By doing this at this scale we can learn from the other partners that may have already surpassed some problems and promote a faster development of less development countries. We can also share knowledge and resources and make the co-creation process leaner and more impactful.
