Summary

Saarland University, founded in 1948 with a French-German-DNA, 17,000 students and a faculty of 4,600, has repeatedly proven its research strength in its focus areas Europe, Computer Science and Nano BioMed. The University is the nucleus for important transformation for Saarland, which has historically been focused on coal & steel. Since the early nineties, a robust multi-disciplinary foundation has been laid, and today the University is ranked as one of the best entrepreneurship universities in Germany. As proof of this entrepreneurial, pioneering spirit, Saarland University was the first entrepreneurial University in Germany with a start-up center, ranked #2 in Gemany and has shown strongest improvement.
With an eye on economic and social transforming needs, Saarland University has created “Triathlon” – a fully integrated ecosystem for entrepreneurship and technology transfer. Triathlon captures the entire entrepreneurial journey, including structuring and developing of concepts, business plans, products and team development. It encompasses broad support of start-ups and technology transfer from initiation, foundation to implementation and scale-up. It provides sincnificant resources, two starter centers, a connected Science Park (9000 sqm, office/laboratory) and an additional Innovation Center (1800 sqm) is operational Q4/23.
The University is nucleus of Saarlands Science and Technology Campus -creating an unique innovation-plattform in Germany - including first class research institutes such as e.g. German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Center for IT Security (CISPA), Leibnitz Institute for New Materials (INM), Max Planck Research Institutes (Informatics & Software Systems), Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT), Research Center for Material Engineering (MECS).

Acknowledgements

We are proud and happy, that over so many years we received such a continuous and essential support by our Saarland government from different departments and of a lot of political influencers and corporate partners. They challenged us and gave us the trust and financial support to further develop our comprehensive strategy for our integrated ecosystem for entrepreneurship, innovation and transfer. The same applies to a lot of regional institutions such as the chamber of commerce, Saaris, Fitt and renowed institutes such as Max-Planck Innovation GmbH, our JV-Partner for the incubation programme and many others such as ZeMA (Center for Mechatronics and Automation Technology), August Wilhelm Scheer Institut, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Steinbeis Research Center Material Engineering Center Saarland (MECS) and Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT), to name only some of them.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

The Saarland - the smallest federal state in Germany - has had a dynamic history. In the past, it used to be one of the economic engines for the entire country. However, structural challenges to its core industries - coal, steel and automotive - have left Saarland with limited financial capabilities and very strong needs of its own reinvention. The responsibility to act as an impulse generator for the structural and societal transformation of the region falls squarely on University of Saarland (UdS) and its possibilities to impact. With the UdS-transformation to an entrepreneurial university and the gerneration of “Triathlon” as a fully integrated ecosystem has already had a significant impact on the people who call Saarland home.
Within the last five years, hundrets of entrepreneurship events have been offered to more than 15,000 participants, representing a commitment of over 120,000 training hours. Over 500 startups have been actively supported, >4000 new directs jobs (many more indirect) and various technology spin-offs/ -transfers also for SME/industry have been generated.
In total, thousands of founders have been coached - recently female founders representing over 30% of them. Since 2019 more than 50 companies have been “hands-on-developed” as part of deep accelerator-/ incubation programs. The university is an share-holder in 13 of these companies and supports them by an active asset-mangement. Furthermore, in the last years, approximately 20 million euros p.a. in external funding/investments have flowed into new start-ups and demonstrade an increasing acceptance of the Saarland efforts to reinvent themselve.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

When looking back on our recent activities, there are three key learnings that we have taken onboard:

The first was the need to make a real commitment to our "Third Mission," taking us beyond teaching and research and truly interlinking the resposibility of the University with that of the region, especially its societal and economic needs.

Secondly, the necessity to create one entrepreneurial engagement home, living under one roof and be an active part in our community and networks. By bundling all our activities under Triathlon, the implementation was further professionalized, and solid interdisciplinary structures were created to broadly cover the entire life cycle of a startup- or transfer-project.

Lastly, the importance of looking beyond our borders and working more collaboratively and internationally. Due to its location, the Saarland region is ideally situated to create broader engagement between the French, Luxemburg and German startup ecosystems. In total the University participates in over 40 active partnerships with institutional startup networks. In 2022, the University participated in more than 30 international entrepreneurship events. We are also honored to coordinate the entrepreneurial EU alliance “Transform4Europe”.

The application of all these learnings is already very fruitful. Over the past years, Saarland University has been ranked Top Ten out of more then 230 universities by the German Gründungsradar. Recently the University captures the number 2 position and we a very proud to support our state Saarland to transform itself together with responsible technologies and highly dedicated people.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

Our long-term vision is to be an international highly recognized place of education, research and entrepreneurship. With our integrated ecosystem “Triathlon” we like to lead a new path in fostering and developing startups and growth companies that can establish global footprints. We strive to develop start-ups to champions. We look to be excellent in supporting people that can positively affect society in an sustainable manner. Diversity is vital to us, and we will focus on FURTHER increasing female and international student engagement in among all faculties.
Over the next five years, “Triathlon” will grow further and position it self as a kind of “social business”. We want professionally support, mentor, and coach over 700 startup teams, from which we will create and found additional 200 new companies. Our goal will be to develop strong leaders that support our home region and generate thousands of new jobs. Our efforts shall lead in generating an innovative entrepreneurial spirit in our region. We think internationally and like to generate an “entrepreneurial hub” with our neighbours France and Luxemburg. Our objective is also to build an own investment fund with partners, which shall enable us to support our start-ups better in upcoming growth phases.
We believe especially in opportunities of “deep tech start-ups." This takes right attitude, strong support, higher investments and patience. In this context, we will upgrade our incubator, build our Innovation Center and invest in our upcoming Growth Center. We are highly motivated within our own journey. Saarland: Ready. Set. Transform!
