Summary

For UNIMINUTO, entrepreneurship is the opportunity to transform the human environment and the possibility of building a dignified life through progress, particularly for Colombia's most vulnerable population. We believe that entrepreneurship has the potential to change people's lives. This is how the university has committed itself through its policy documents and the establishment of 18 Progress Centers that provide services to Colombian youth, as well as the establishment of the country's first Social Innovation Science Park, the implementation of different programs to support entrepreneurs and micro-enterprises in the popular economy for accessing financing for entrepreneurs, training, technical assistance, business development, mentoring, and incubation.

Our primary outcomes include 177,000 young people trained in entrepreneurship, 7,692 ideas incubated, 4,104 productive units, companies created and strengthened, 25,904 micro-businesses strengthened, 52,000 jobs, 127,000 people involved in social innovation solutions, and 2,372 organizations created. The Vice Presidency of the Republic of Colombia has recognized the contributions to the country's economic reactivation, as well as the nomination for the Reimagine Education 2019 awards and entry into the prestigious QS Latin America University Ranking 2023.

The participation of UNIMINUTO in the Triple E Awards is an opportunity to highlight the university's commitment to entrepreneurship and social transformation. Being chosen as a winner in the Entrepreneurial University category would be a demonstration of the university's efforts in developing leaders who are committed to the well-being of their communities.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

UNIMINUTO is an exceptional entrepreneurial university that has demonstrated its commitment to the community; its unique approach to integrating entrepreneurship throughout the university has transformed the lives of many people, particularly the country's most vulnerable population. Young entrepreneurs, businesspeople, street vendors, women, and farm producers who face adversity have found in UNIMINUTO the assistance they require to advance and create their own jobs.

UNIMINUTO has trained thousands of people in entrepreneurial skills and assisted in the launch and growth of hundreds of businesses through its entrepreneurship programs. However, its impact extends beyond the realm of business. The university has fostered social innovation and supported projects that address real social and environmental problems and have improved the lives of many Colombians through their implementation.

Elena Bustamante is an inspiring example. She was able to launch her own clothing business thanks to UNIMINUTO's support and training, not only improving her life and that of her family, but also creating employment for herself and your collaborators. Similarly, the testimony of micro-business owners Fabiola Martinez and German Montoya, who were able to reactivate their businesses after the pandemic and continue to grow with the help of the MD MICRONEGOCIOS program. Finally, the accompaniment of the peasant women's association is one of the testimonies that demonstrate the impact of the institution's efforts.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

At UNIMINUTO, we have discovered that entrepreneurship is more than just a way for our young people to find work; it's also a powerful tool for them to create social and economic change in their families and communities. We discovered that the diversity of entrepreneurs in our country requires constant adaptation of our methodologies in order to effectively support them. Collaborating with entrepreneurs in a variety of fields, from technology to agriculture, we have discovered that active listening and collaborative problem-solving skills are critical to providing effective assistance. We have learned that achieving a significant impact requires teamwork and collaboration with other entities as well.

Our advice to those considering a similar path is to focus on serving the lowest-income entrepreneurs, who account for 70% of jobs in developing economies. Furthermore, we recommend developing a comprehensive ecosystem to support entrepreneurs, which includes entrepreneurship centers as well as continuous experimentation and solution creation, so that entrepreneurs feel heard and have access to relevant, creative knowledge and critical thinking to find innovative solutions to current challenges.

UNIMINUTO is proud of its work and of having made a significant difference in the lives of entrepreneurs and their communities. We will continue to work hard to help our entrepreneurs and bring about positive change in our country. We invite everyone to learn more about our university and to join our entrepreneurial community.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

UNIMINUTO is committed to the development and strengthening of the entrepreneurship ecosystem, and it intends to create a series of services that will provide entrepreneurs with tools, resources, and specialized advice to help their businesses and projects grow.

Among these services is the establishment of an innovation and technology center, which provides access to the latest trends and technological tools, as well as a business acceleration unit, which provides personalized advice and financial assistance to entrepreneurs in the growth phase of their businesses and companies. Similarly, it is also proposed the establishment of a business incubator that provides workspace, training, and mentoring to entrepreneurs, as well as a research and development center that allows collaboration in innovative projects with a social impact.

Furthermore, an international exchange and cooperation program that allows entrepreneurs to establish contacts and collaborations with companies from other countries has been considered, as an education and training program in business and leadership skills that prepares students and graduates to face the challenges of the business worldwide.

Collaboration with private companies and the formation of strategic alliances with other institutions are proposed to finance the implementation of these services. In addition, resources are being sought to strengthen the social fund for entrepreneurs.

With these initiatives, UNIMINUTO hopes to reaffirm its commitment to the development of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and to contribute to the emergence of new businesses and job opportunities in the country and region.
