Summary

I am currently the director of EPIC (Entrepreneurship, Professional Services and Innovation Center) at Nile University, and the executive director of NilePreneurs, a nationwide initiative to support entrepreneurs and SMEs. Over the past 11 years, I have managed to lead the entrepreneurial activities at NU, making it one of the leading entrepreneurial universities in Egypt and the region. I have built one of Egypt’s strongest entrepreneurship and innovation centers, which is currently employing 80 professionals working in project management, product development, company support and technology transfer. And through NilePreneurs, I have led a team that supported more than 270 startups and over 700 SMEs, as well as helped 170+ product development projects, in addition to building capacity for thousands of young men and women.

My leadership advice to aspiring leaders is to be the intrapreneur within their organizations. They should work on acquiring the necessary resources. Also, establish excellent connections with the university leadership to acquire buy in and support. At the same time, empower their team in order to be able to grow and scale operations.

My plans for the upcoming period include continuous improvement and expansion of entrepreneurship support at NU. Also, offering NU’s services to other universities in Egypt and the region in a variety of means (partnership, paid consultancy, implementation services, etc…)

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank my team who have been working hard to achieve what we reached, and exhibiting entrepreneurial traits as they continuously improve, expand and come up with new ideas.

Acknowledgements

I would like to acknowledge the entities that have supported the entrepreneurial journey. The Central Bank of Egypt had been instrumental as a strategic co-founder in NilePreneurs initiative. Also, the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology and Ministry of Planning have strongly contributed to NU’s Entrepreneurial Activities. In addition, the EU through Erasmus+ capacity building program has supported knowledge and resources, while the US-Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) has paved the way for NU to establish its entrepreneurship activities. Not to forget, the Baking sector in Egypt through Banque Misr, QNB, E-Bank, SCB, HDB, IDB, UB, BDC and HSBC.

Furthermore, I would like to extend my appreciation to our different partners for success: from UN organizations - ILO, UNDP, ITU; the various export councils: Engineering, Chemicals, Furniture, Printing and Packaging; partner universities Egypt: Ain Shams, Cairo, Fayoum, Arab Academy for Science and Technology, Azhar; as well as in Europe: University of Turku, Finland, Frei Universitat Berlin, Germany, University of Oviedo, Spain, and many more.

And of course I would very much like to thank the university leadership who have believed in our mission, provided support and availed the necessary resources to establish this activity.

But mostly, I would like to sincerely thank my team who have been working hard to achieve what we reached, and exhibiting entrepreneurial traits as they continuously improve, expand and come up with new ideas.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

Eleven years ago, Nile University, where I had done my MSc 3 years earlier, was going through trouble with its land and buildings having been confiscated by the government. At that time NU was going through many legal disputes and too much drama in the Egyptian media about its legal rights. Back then I had my own startup, but I kept a connection with my university. I went into the university president's office and pitched a crazy idea about NU starting a nationwide entrepreneurship competition. Entrepreneurship wasn’t as recognized as it is right now, and NU was one of the very few universities teaching it, so my proposal was that the university should also practice it, to show the world its true colors, rather than only be communicating about its problems.
I reached out to the US Middle East Partnership Initiative funding program. I pitched the idea of “NU100”, a developmental tech entrepreneurship competition. We received funding for USD 400k for which we managed to run the competition over the span of 2 years, providing capacity building for 400 young men and women all over Egypt, and supporting 18 startups in developing their products and taking them to the market.
Through NU100, NU built its name in the ecosystem, established connections with many organizations, and built capacity of many individuals who are now either successful entrepreneurs, or ecosystem actors. It also set the foundation for NilePreneurs, which is currently the largest university entrepreneurship initiative in Egypt.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

Be the entrepreneur: it is important that one acts as the entrepreneur within the university, taking the initiative to initiate projects, launch programs, and build connections without waiting for the upper university leadership to request it.

Acquire the resources: an entrepreneurship leader should have the necessary resources to operate the entrepreneurship unit. The seed funding to acquire these resources can be provided by the university (and one might need to lobby for that) but eventually, much further resources/funds has to be raised (CSR sponsorship, grants, monetization of services, etc…)
Get leadership buy in: engaging the university leadership in entrepreneurial activities, and acquiring their buy-in and support via communicating the progress of activities and success stories.

Empowering the team: as entrepreneurship and innovation activities expand, it is important to identify and curate talent to join the team. The leader should provide the capacity building for the team members and empower them to come up and execute their own ideas, while giving them support and guidance.

Planning and Impact Measurement: the leader should set an annual plan for the unit/department outlining the objectives and key results and measure the outcomes at the end of every period, identifying areas that require further intervention.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

Continuous improvement of entrepreneurship activities at NU: this is an ongoing process, to periodically updated the systems and revisit the standard operating procedures, in addition to providing capacity building to the evolving/expanding team

Augmenting the entrepreneurship offering at NU through exploration of establishment of a venture studio. Currently we are exploring this scenario, along with establishment of a spinoff investment company

Roll out of entrepreneurial university assessment tool to be used with other universities: this can be offered it as a service to the ecosystem, to be sponsored by third parties

Expansion of NilePreneurs model and its replication in more universities in Egypt: Based on the success of NilePreneurs, the Central Bank of Egypt have expressed their interest in expanding the presence of NilePreneurs into other partner universities across dispersed geographies. In such a case, our team at NU will share their experience with the other universities and support them in their operations through transfer of systems, building capacity of satellite teams and building central dashboards so that the head team at NU can follow up on other universities until they become fully autonomous

Transfer the NU experience to other universities in the Middle East and Africa: I would like to tap into the market of other universities oversees, offering them a paid consultancy service. The service will include the assessment of university, capacity building of university staff, and possible establishing programs for such universities.
