Summary

As the Student Entrepreneurship Programme Manager at Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas workspace, I have spent over four years developing programmes and systems that empower student innovation and value creation within our university-based innovation community. My approach emphasizes openness and accessibility over control and exclusivity, drawing on the insights of Brad Feld and Ian Hathaway's "The Startup Community Way." My entrepreneurial leadership style is primarily characterized by three competencies from the EntreComp Framework: Taking the Initiative, Motivation & Perseverance, and Ethical & Sustainable Thinking. These competencies have been evident in various ways throughout my work.

For example, I took the initiative to develop the first iteration of our digital platform, to increase the accessibility of our programmes. I then persevered to co-develop a new system with TheStartup.com that better served the needs of our student innovators. Throughout this process, I was guided by ethical and sustainable thinking, as exemplified by the name I chose: the "Open Incubator." By fostering a strong social fabric, we aim to support a more long-term and sustainable approach to student entrepreneurship programming.

The impact of our work has been significant, drawing over 2,000 users between our 1st “Tangent Online” Blackboard module and our 2nd “Open Incubator” platform with TheStartup.com. Our programs supported top student startups, elevating Tangent and Trinity College Dublin's profile at the local, national, and international level. My goal is to democratize entrepreneurship, providing equal access to knowledge and opportunity, supporting minorities and future leaders. Our 3rd generation platform will be available nationwide in 2023.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

The success of the Open Incubator goes beyond its digital platform. As the Student Entrepreneurship Programme Manager at Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas workspace, I also hosted open hours that encouraged students to develop their ideas, work on group projects, or ask me questions about their ideas. This parallel programme increased returning students to the floor from 5% in October 2019 to 36% in February of 2020. This welcoming atmosphere is why two Pharmacy students, who had an idea that had nothing to do with their degree, felt comfortable asking for my help. Our conversation during open hours was just the beginning of their journey. I encouraged them to pursue their idea, and they went on to apply for, participate in, and win our LaunchBox student accelerator with their startup, ProMotion. The fact that Tangent welcomes students from all disciplines meant that these Pharmacy students could bring their unique perspective and expertise to the table. Their success didn't stop there, as they raised €725,000 in pre-seed investment in October of 2022. By prioritizing openness and accessibility in our programming, Tangent and the Open Incubator have enabled students from all backgrounds to develop their entrepreneurial ideas and achieve success.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

As the Student Entrepreneurship Programme Manager at Tangent, and as a former student entrepreneur, I have had the opportunity to witness the evolution of various support programs for student entrepreneurs from both the organizer and participant’s perspectives. Through this journey I have identified five key elements that underpin my approach to programme design and development.

1. Prioritize Innovators: Student innovators want quick answers to their questions. Focus on providing them with easily accessible support and resources without worrying about recruiting targets. If what you are providing is valuable, they will come back for more.

2. Focus Long-Term: Short-term programmatic KPIs, like application or mentorship numbers, lose their shine after two or three iterations. Instead of focusing on these, zoom out and try to develop a social fabric through continuous programmatic elements that allow students to participate at their own pace.

3. Encourage Diversity: Business students are the low hanging fruit that can fill programmes but putting in the extra effort to drive more diverse engagement will result in far more ambitious and unexpected innovation.

4. Technology is inevitable, but human contact is irreplaceable: Scalable systems are crucial, but in-person activities drive engagement and serendipitous community building that can’t be replicated online. Strike a balance between technology and tangible, face-to-face interaction.

5. Collaborate to prevent drop-off: Try to organize consistent open activities throughout the year, but where there are gaps provide clear pathways to resources and opportunities in your local ecosystem. This will prevent participants from losing interest and disengaging.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

The next stage of my journey will involve the roll-out of Open Incubator 3.0. This system and programme set builds upon the success achieved to date and will serve to better link Ireland’s university-based innovation ecosystem.

Key Elements:

1. The Website openincubator.ie that makes it easy for university-based innovators to navigate through all of Ireland’s events and programmes.

2. The Venture Portal, powered by TheStartup.com that empowers university based innovators to develop their venture profiles by taking on playbooks that prepare them to apply for local and national programmes/opportunities

3. Integrated in-person activities and programmes that foster the development of a social fabric across Ireland’s university-based innovation ecosystem.
