Summary

The mission of Universidad del Desarrollo (UDD) is to serve Chile by generating influential knowledge and training 21st century changemakers who not only excel in their respective fields but also in interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving when addressing the local and global challenges faced by society.

In 2020, the UDD celebrated its 30th anniversary, having started with just 100 business undergraduate students in a rented house in downtown Concepción, 500 km south of Santiago. Since then, the university has grown into a top-rated academic institution with a focus on entrepreneurial education, serving 15,000 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students across a diverse range of schools and disciplines, earning recognition for its thriving entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem.

At UDD's Vice Presidency of Innovation and especially at its Entrepreneurship Department, our mission is to develop this ecosystem by providing training and support to any single student who want to explore venturing or need help increasing the success probability of their venture through methodologies, tools, mentoring, networks, and funding opportunities. In the last 5 years, we have provided support to over 1,200 startups in different development stages through specialized training and incubating programs. Furthermore, every UDD student is required to take at least one entrepreneurship course during their academic career, with more than 70 undergraduate courses offered on entrepreneurship topics in 2022. These courses not only focus on creating new businesses but also aim to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and skillset to make a positive change in any area of life.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

Pamela Salazar, a UDD Industrial Engineer, is the founder of the startup uMov. She created a kinesic-technological device called ALBA, which aims to restore the functionality of patients who have suffered from cerebrovascular accidents. This venture was awarded the National Avonni Prize for Innovation in 2021 and has recently been selected to participate as a successful academic-entrepreneurial case in the 5th Universia International Meeting of Rectors, a network of 1,216 universities.

"UDD played a crucial role in the realization of Alba. We developed our idea through dLab, a degree program designed for selected multi-disciplinary final year students. It focuses on innovation, providing key support in refining our solution and make it a reality. UDD also provided training and incubating opportunities like Acelera UDD and Demo Day UDD, which were instrumental in creating and adding value to our product. Additionally, UDD Ventures, the university's business accelerator, supported us in securing our first public funding."

Like Pamela, there are other noteworthy examples of an entrepreneurial mindset, such as the UDD student ambassadors team belonging to the Babson College Collaborative international network. When the Taliban conflict erupted in Afghanistan, they managed to rescue and relocate one of their fellow ambassador colleagues from that country, having to manage all that it entailed, even reaching out to the Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs to achieve their goal. Currently, Fatema Jalaly, the Afghan ambassador, is based in Chile and teaches at UDD.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

An entrepreneurial university requires strong leadership to foster a pro-entrepreneurship culture. At UDD, entrepreneurship is a fundamental value in our educational project and throughout the university, from its founding to the present.

People are key to building and sustaining an organizational culture that values entrepreneurship. Through them, our aim is to ensure that our commitment to entrepreneurship is not just an intention, but translates into concrete actions and results that transform our university and our engaged community over the long term.

It's essential to emphasize that we define entrepreneurship in a broad, cross-cutting way throughout the university, not limited solely to the traditional perspective of creating startups or businesses. At UDD, we view entrepreneurship as a mindset, a necessary skill to be developed by all students and future professionals. It's a 21st-century competence that is fundamental for every organization today.

We have gained valuable insights by forging partnerships with exceptional international universities and networks. For instance, we have a long-standing relationship with Babson College, a global leader in entrepreneurship education, and are now part of the Babson Collaborative network, where UDD is a Circle of Influence member. We have also collaborated with Stanford University through their Stanford Technology Ventures Program. Moreover, UDD is the only South American university designated as a Changemaker Campus by Ashoka, alongside over 40 other prestigious institutions worldwide. By actively engaging with key national and international ecosystems, UDD has established a robust entrepreneurship and innovation environment that is fundamental to our success.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

UDD's 2021-2025 Institutional Strategic Plan, "Building the University of the Future," outlines an academic vision that stands out for offering a cohesive educational proposal that meets the challenges of the 21st century. For UDD, the University of the Future is characterized by an entrepreneurial spirit, a thriving and engaging innovation ecosystem, a culture that fosters continuous adaptation of our academic value proposition and processes, a commitment to training all students in 21st-century skills, an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving, tackling the ongoing challenges of digital transformation, and providing a life-changing experience to our students.

Regarding entrepreneurship programming, our next steps are as follows:
Work closely with the management of undergraduate and graduate degree programs to integrate more entrepreneurship education and support into their curriculum, going beyond our current across-campus programs.
Address gaps in our growing entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem, such as in internationalization, access to private funding, and fostering more technology-based startups from our student body.

Expand and strengthen the UDD Founders network with a clear value proposition that fosters connection among community members and the university.

Promote a venturing culture and increase student participation in entrepreneurship programs, while highlighting the impact stories of UDD startups and changemakers.

Extend our outreach entrepreneurship programs to students from other higher education institutions, as well as high school students and teachers, to contribute to Chilean education and economic development.

Establish UDD as a leader in entrepreneurship education in the Latin American region.
