Summary

The Cooperative University of Colombia is an Auxiliary Institution of Cooperativism and Solidarity Economy since its foundation in 1958. In recent years, from the Institute of Social Economy and Cooperativism (INDESCO), we have been building a university ecosystem for solidarity entrepreneurship and social innovation where valuable connections are generated between local and international actors. Research, teaching and community engagement dynamics are combined with the purpose of developing ideas that contribute to the reality, theory and movement of Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE), seeing it as a booster for sustainable development.

Regarding teaching, three competencies have been defined to educate our students: TO BE active citizens, TO KNOW the Social Solidarity Economy and TO ENTREPRENEUR in the Social and Solidarity Economy.

In respect of research, there are several interdisciplinary research groups and projects related to topics such as public policies, management, gender perspective, sustainable and local development, family farming and impact measurement. We also take an active part in national and international academic research networks.

Concerning community engagement, we have been working on solidarity entrepreneurship and social innovation through different courses and practices. We also have created the Rymel Serrano Uribe award as one of the initiatives to encourage new associative business and to contribute to the organizational strengthening of existing Social and Solidarity organizations.

As the ecosystem has matured, flows between one university function and another have increased, interdisciplinary work teams have strengthened, and international alliances and public recognition have grown up.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

One of the objectives of the Cooperative University of Colombia is to connect the Social and Solidarity Economy with the students’ learning passion to generate opportunities that are interesting both to them and society. With this aim, “Seedbeds” for formative research and Social and Solidarity entrepreneurship were created. This is the case of The Social and Solidarity Digital Entrepreneurship Seedbed - SIEDSS and the Solidarity Economy and Fair-Trade Seedbed - ES JUSTO.

Both groups have had the opportunity to present to different international competitions such as the Mondragon City Challenge and to get finalists in the 2021 and 2022 version. This intercultural experience was very significant for the students because they could travel to Europe and meet other young entrepreneurs of the world as well as open professional horizons through the Social and Solidarity Economy.

The objective of the students from TransDigital Coop, from SIEDSS is to aid the Social and Solidarity Economy organizations to achieve the digital transformation they need to survive in the market. With the slogan: ¡Digital transformation for all!

The purpose of the students from ES JUSTO is to empower the women who prepare the typical dishes of the region through organizational and marketing strategies, thereby opening the doors to social gourmet gastronomy.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

The development and promotion of an ecosystem for the social and solidarity economy implies redefining problems beyond traditional borders and reaching solutions based on the deep analysis and active action towards the complex situations in society. As a consequence, it is crucial to progress in the creation of an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary culture leaving behind assistance models to build participatory models for social transformation.

Additionally, for the university, there have been very important local and international alliances. We consider that the mutual learning perspective and knowledge transferring and exchanging are essential to build peaceful scenarios with social, economic and environmental justice.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

First of all, the “Solidarity Territories UCC '' is progressing as part of the university's strategic plan. The idea is to achieve during the next years the commitment of all university campuses to promote solidarity integration networks for local development, within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals – SDGs.

The university is going to advance in the three knowledge and technology transfer projects: the Social and Solidarity Economy Observatory in Colombia, the Popular, Social and Solidarity Economy Incubator (INCUBEPSS) and the Spin off which has the objective to support the new associative businesses that are emerging from the Seedbeds.

Finally, the UNESCO Chair of Social and Solidarity Economy approved for 2023 to 2027, it is a new window to continue working in the promotion of an integrated system that includes research, training, information and documentation on the Social and Solidarity Economy to promote better futures.
