Summary

Value Creators (VC) is an innovative educational concept embedded in the programme Global Project and Change Management (BBA). For students outside of our programme, Value Creators is offered as a minor. The VC semester is a learning environment to experience change agency in the context of urgency, uncertainty and complexity addressing complex questions related to the SDG Agenda. This semester is unique because questions are more important than the answers and the learning focus is in the journey, not in the end result. We do not offer lessons, but support students with some professional workshops. From knowledge as goal to knowledge as a tool. Students are encouraged to find the knowledge they need in different ways outside the walls of university. Starting with a complex question, and guided by our 4E-Model (Explore, Engage, Elaborate and Evaluate), students start collaboration processes with different networks, seeking transdisciplinary co-creation that helps them to sense the emergence narratives of the complex system and see where actions can be taken. Value Creators is a place to imagine together and to define personal and professional change agency. It is not about solutions, it is about soulutions that can help us transform our models of thinking and challenge existing paradigms. We believe that complex social systems challenges require social systems solutions, and Value Creators is the place to learn how to visualise the whole system and operate from the whole. We have design an educational environment for emergence of scenarios to address the Sustainable Development Goals.

Acknowledgements

We are so thankful to all of our Value Creators students who each year enrol and fully engage with this educational journey. Despite the uncertainty and the different educational approach, they let go to let in and they grow to create a better version of themselves and their futures, surprising us with the social value they create each semester. To all the networks that are open to collaborate and co-create with them, specially those who hold yearly an open door for our students and who have been so kind to recognise us as best practice: UN SDSN, UN Habitat, Earth Charter International, UNAI and WEAll, among others. Our recognition and thanks to our team at Global Project and Change Management, for feeding us with love, support and ideas to keep the Value Creators running.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

The Value Creators journey is an immersive experience for students that not only work with the SDGs but also focus in their own Inner Development Goals, discovering their personal and professional purposes and passions. This semester changes their lives in so many ways. This is the case of Chiara Moenter. She followed the Value Creators during COVID pandemic. Moving Value Creators journey to virtual settings was challenging for students and coaches. Chiara and her fellow students questioned why in the SDGs agenda it was an special goal for life on Earth, and also life under the water, but no reference to the space when we are polluting it, militarizing it, colonising it, etc. They engaged with different networks and UN invited them to create a dialogue around the topic in the framework of the UN 75th Anniversary. More than 200 people participated and as result, Space for All was launched. The Value Creators planted a seed in Chiara’s professional and personal purpose: “Because of the inter and transdisciplinary setting of Value Creators, I discovered my interest for the space sector, something I would have not expected a year before. The network within the space sector allowed me to discover more about the space and universal awareness”. Chiara continued to explore this interest during her final bachelor thesis. Soon she became one of the most relevant young space influencers in Europe. She is now working for the European Space Agency and considering pursuing her PhD in Space sustainability.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

In 2017 we launched the first pilot of Value Creators. Moving from knowledge as a goal to knowledge as a tool was challenging in higher education, which is mostly used to work with transmission (lectures/teacher centred) and transaction (project based/student-client centred) forms of education. Experimenting with an scenario which was world-centred and transformative, was exciting and at the same time scary for lecturers and students. We had to learn to do things in another way. We had to learn to change our role from lectures (in control of our area of expertise and discipline) to become guides, coaches, facilitators and gardeners of transformative learning spaces. This required an open mind a loads of flexibility to learn, adapt and redesign each semester. Innovation is a continuum. That is one of the lessons learn. You cannot develop static forms of transformative learning. You cannot design a concept and stop there. You have to embrace this learning environments as organic, growing and changing every semester, yet grounded in a solid instructional design, which in our case is the 4E-Model (Explore, Engage, Elaborate and Evaluate). We never expected the engagement that our students have shown through the years. They evaluate our concept as challenging, uncertain, chaotic, yet a full transformative experience that have made them aware of their own learning process. Our students journeys, their actions and collaboration processes with their networks, continue surprising us every semester. When you provide the soil and the space for sustainability performance, sustainability action takes place.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

We believe that Value Creators is an educational concept that can be implemented by other universities. Due to its inter and transdisciplinary character, students from different disciplines can benefit from a Value Creators learning journey. Therefore, in our plans for the future, we envision scaling up and sharing our Value Creators concept to other universities. This also will allow in the future to have Value Creators students from different disciplines and universities around the world, addressing together similar complex questions from different perspectives and cultural backgrounds. This will increase the inter and transdisciplinary approach and definitely will create more social value grounded in different voices and different network co-creating together. We are working now to make this future a reality. We are building an online platform for collaboration and we are inviting partner universities to join our journey and experiment with the Value Creators concept in their universities. We believe our youth can create value today, not only in the future. Back in 2021, the Dutch Ministry of Education awarded Value Creators with the Award of Higher Education recognising Value Creators potential as innovative education for the future. We believe the future is now. We have been in this journey since 2017 and we continue addressing the challenges of today and our future, guiding our students to take action.
