IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

One of the core pillars that supports MSU’s Vision as a leading transformative global university is embedded in its Mission as a Caring Institution. This Mission ensures the advancement in life of the talented but disadvantaged is not impeded by socio-economic standing, with opportunities that enable the gifted to achieve their true potential and actualize their dreams. To achieve this objective, Yayasan MSU (MSU Foundation) was established to manage all endowments to the recipients, be it institutions, communities, or individuals. Various programs are conducted to engage with the relevant stakeholders in identifying and channeling the required assistance to the targeted recipients. Even during the pandemic period (2020 to 2023) a total amount of MYR86.2 million (USD19 Million) worth of scholarships and financial assistance were provided which benefited an average of 3,800 students annually. This is to ensure that the students’ education is not disrupted by the severe social and economic impact of Covid-19 pandemic.

In addition, 1315 programs promoting all the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals from SDG1-No Poverty to SDG17-Partnerships for the Goals, were conducted with the participation of all students and faculty members. These programs, among others, involve engagements with indigenous people, urban poor communities, orphanages, schools, senior citizens, disaster victims, and socially and economically challenged communities. MSU’s efforts in this perspective is recognized under THE Impact University Ranking (Global Ranking 400-601) and 5-Star QS Rating in the areas of Inclusiveness, Social Responsibility, Academic Development, Teaching, On-line Learning, and Hospitality and Leisure Management.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

The Covid-19 Pandemic caught everyone by surprise. It has impacted the health and socio-economy of countries and communities. Our greatest concern was to ensure that the education process of our students continues in the most effective and efficient manner without compromising on the quality of education.

Through continuous engagements with various stakeholders: government agencies, alumni, students, parents, and academic and industry partners, we switched from face-to-face to online learning within a short period of time. The pandemic had accelerated the application of technology in learning. As a university we had to be agile, optimize the use of technology and adjust to the new education landscape. As the campus returns to normalization, MSU continues to provide three modes of learning to its students – fully online, hybrid, and face-to-face depending on the suitability and needs of the programs.

MSU provides counseling sessions to the community to address mental health issues impacted by the pressure of the pandemic. MSU took the initiative to re-schedule fee payments allowing flexibility for parents who were financially impacted, and MSU Foundation continues its funding to the economically impacted students through scholarships and financial assistance.

Public health became a great concern to all. In support of Malaysia’s government in managing the impact of covid-19, MSU launched Partnership for Covid Elimination (PACE) Program - a five-pillared program involving industry partners and health agencies. The Program includes health awareness and health assessment, SDG programs involving community, front-liners, students, and parents, and multi-disciplinary research. 200,000 people benefited from this program.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

No man is an island – so is a university. It needs to co-exist symbiotically as part of a dynamic ecosystem. Three strategic pillars that will drive our future: Sustainability, Collaboration and Internationalization. MSU’s success is determined by its ability to sustain through collaborative partnerships and engagements with its stakeholders. Thus, continuous engagements with key stakeholders ensure that we are agile and adaptive to the needs of the society. Extensive industry collaborations will remain as one of the key success factors to MSU. The cohesive industry collaborations support an integrated industry-academic ecosystem that enhances teaching and learning experience, graduates’ employability, applied research, talent developments and community engagements.

Sustainability is seen beyond financial. It is also value driven. Sustainability includes the development of talents that have both academic excellence and appropriate values that benefit individuals and society. As values differ between societies, developing talents with cultural intelligence is key to ensuring a harmonious society. The UN 17 SDGs will continue to be embedded and translated within MSU’s engagement programs to develop a holistic, balanced, and well-rounded graduates.

MSU shall continue with its internalization programs. MSU recently launched its dual-campus and double-degree programmes with Indonesia. In addition to the already established campus in India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia, MSU will further expand its international campus to strategic locations globally. Partnering with over 300 international universities coupled with the acceleration of new technology adoptions, MSU is prime to offer multiple modes of learning and make accessibility to global education a reality.
