Summary

MSU’s Vision is to be a leading transformative global university, engaging society through entrepreneurship, research, innovation, industry embedment, and holistic education for a better future. MSU takes a broad perspective of sustainability leadership by engaging with all the ecosystems that have a direct and indirect impact on sustainability. Core to the transformative vision is the leadership commitment towards the comprehensive adoption and implementation of United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

To achieve this, MSU has a dedicated Core University Priority on Sustainability. Sustainability is viewed beyond financials and physical infrastructures. MSU value-driven approach integrates commitment to environmental and societal responsibilities through structured programs, infrastructure development, applied research, community engagements, and partnership with industries and authorities. Among significant green initiatives include: SEDA Malaysia Sustainable Energy Low Carbon Building Assessment Accreditation, Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation Low Carbon City 2030 Challenge (LCC), Green Electricity Tariff (GET), EV Charging Stations, solar powered lighting, motion sensor taps and lighting, rainwater harvesting, SDG programs such as MyMountain, MyMangrove, MyCoral, River Trail Project and indigenous community MySolar Project.

MSU’s inclusive strategic engagement on sustainability with all its stakeholders has steered MSU to be ranked 401-600 in the Times Higher Education University Impact Ranking, Top 150 in the QS Asia Ranking, 2-Diamond SEDA Malaysia Sustainable Energy Low Carbon Building Assessment Accreditation, 3 and 4 Diamond Rating for energy and water reduction usage under Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), and Certified Member for Green Electricity Tariff (GET).

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

MSU’s Vision is to be a leading transformative global university. With our tagline “Transforming Lives, Enriching Future”, it is our vision to transform the lives of those who pass through our educational process. Key to the transformation is the embedment of fundamental values toward sustainability in the broadest context. Sustainability is seen beyond financial and infrastructures but the ability to positively impact human-driven values that influence the future of society. Thus, besides the typical quantifiable financial and infrastructure goals and achievements, MSU emphasizes on a value-driven approach toward sustainability. These values can only be embedded through structured learning experiences via various environmental and community engagement programs.

Using UN 17 SDGs as the foundation, MSU has implemented over 1,315 initiatives covering all UN 17 SDGs. These initiatives have attracted significant interest from NGOs, government agencies, authorities, industry partners, and local communities to collaborate with MSU in the promotion and implementation of sustainable development and green initiatives. Among others, the Programs include: MSU National River Trail Rehabilitation Project (rehabilitation of river and beautification of riverbanks), MyMountain (preservation of mountain), MSU Environmental Sustainability Project (MESP), MyMangrove (preservation and rejuvenation of mangrove ecosystem), MyCoral (propagation, preservation and rehabilitation of corals) and MySolar (improving the living condition of indigenous communities across Malaysia through small-scale renewable energy solutions). In total these programs reached out to 38,700 students, 1,323 communities, 133 NGOs, industry partners and government agencies. MSU is ranked 401-600 in the Times Higher Education University Impact Ranking.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

Sustainability of future generations and communities has always been a core agenda within MSU. We took it as our responsibility to educate the mindsets of our students and the communities that we engage with the importance of sustainable development, both physically and in values. A value-driven sustainable development using UN 17 SDGs as the fundamental, involves educating our students and the communities through structured learning experience and continuous programs that can be measured over a period of time. As such we have taken steps to implement specific initiatives for each of the UN 17 SDGs and these are monitored, evaluated, and reported on a quarterly basis via MSU Core University Priority goals on Sustainability.

All our sustainable initiatives are long-term in nature and involve collaborations with multiple parties – students, faculty members, partner universities, partner industries, and government agencies thus having an inclusive and impactful ecosystem. For example, the MSU river rehabilitation program via MSU Damansara River National River Trail Project is participated by students and faculty members in collaboration with Malaysia’s Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), the National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM), and Friends of Rivers Malaysia. It has an integrated ecosystem that involves physical activities on environment cleaning, sustainable education, research on water quality ecosystem, and government agencies enforcement on water pollution. Thus, for any sustainable initiative to be successful it needs to have specific measurable goals, long-term in nature, stakeholders’ inclusivity and commitment, and continuous education to the communities.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

Providing access to quality education and learning experience to all the stakeholders will be core to ensuring the right mindsets toward value-driven sustainable development. With the advancement of technology, MSU adopts new emerging technologies such as blockchain, metaverse, big data analytics, and international standards of good practice in the implementation of sustainable development programs. These include the use of efficient and sensor-based lighting, implementation of EV charging stations, rainwater harvesting, vertical landscaping, recycling programs, virtual online education, sustainability development research, and SDG programs with the communities.

We will continue to be part of an accredited organization of Malaysia Sustainable Energy Low Carbon Building Assessment, subscribing to renewable energy under Malaysia Green Electricity Tariff, commitment towards the reduction of greenhouse CO2 impact under the Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), participate in MGTC Low Carbon City 2030 Challenge (LCC) to reduce carbon emission, energy consumption, water consumption, and waste generation.

As an ACCEU entrepreneurial accredited university, three strategic pillars will drive our future: Sustainability, Collaboration, and Internationalization. MSU’s continuous success is determined by its ability to sustain itself through collaborative partnerships and engagements with its stakeholders, being agile and adaptive to the changing economic, political, social, and technological landscapes. The cohesive industry collaborations support an integrated industry-academic ecosystem that enhances the teaching and learning experience, graduates’ employability, applied research, talent development, and community engagements. Internationalization strategies through MSU international campuses and strategic partnerships with over 300 international universities will make accessibility to affordable global education for all a reality.
