Summary

Tecnopuc is the Science and Technology Park of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). Since 2003, Tecnopuc nurture a solid interaction between the innovative business environment and academia and has developed solid mechanisms and structures to support innovation. Tecnopuc has consolidated itself as an important link of the Quadruple Helix, and has the generation of wealth from knowledge as its main guide for activating the ecosystem.

Tecnopuc is an ecosystem in motion, attentive to the changes that impact the community. In partnership with companies and municipal and state governments, it dedicated itself on acting strongly in the creation and development of a thriving world-class business environment, aiming to position the region on the global map of innovation and entrepreneurship. The main movements and projects in the area of city and state development were conceived and developed at Tecnopuc’s Criativity Lab and have Tecnopuc as an important active partner: the Alliance for Innovation, the Pacto Alegre (municipal level) and INOVA RS (state level). Along with other Quadruple Helix partners, Tecnopuc acts in a synergistic and collaborative way with all other social and economic actors both at regional and national level.

Since 2018, it has intensified actions aimed at generating new businesses (startups and spin-offs), guided by the strategic intention of generating 1,000 innovative businesses in 10 years.
With the support of our partners, and INOVAPUCRS Network (Academic and Innovation Units of the University) the park has assisted more than 600 new business in the last 5 years.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

One of the drivers of Tecnopuc is the training of new talents in the area of information technology (IT) and the promotion of entrepreneurship. The professional and social development initiatives promoted by the Park have two concrete objectives: to meet the demand in the information and communication technology (ICT) market, especially developers, and to promote the inclusion of young people in a situation of socioeconomic vulnerability in the market. In the ICT area, many young people find the chance to transform the reality in which they find themselves. This change is directly connected with the purpose of the Park, which is to be a vector of transformation in society.

There is a high demand for skilled labour and the deficit in training talent directly impacts the generation of new technologies and the innovation ecosystem as a whole. Tecnopuc has initiatives that involved more than 3,500 young people in 2022 in six training programs offered to meet the demands of the ICT market in the southern region of the country. In most of the programs, we bring together all the actors of the quadruple helix, linking the University, government, companies and society in the same project.

In all initiatives, we provide students with opportunities for contact with professionals and companies that work in the area. We have impressive reports from young people who had never thought about following a career in IT and today are employed in companies that were sponsors in our programs.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

We believe that Science and Technology Parks (STP) and Areas of Innovation (AOI) have to work hard to ensure that cities are prepared to face the challenges that are already changing the society and the best way to do this is joining forces and working together. In order to do that in an innovative way, an alliance led by three large benchmarking Brazilian Universities located in Porto Alegre (UFRGS, PUCRS and Unisinos) and its STPs (Zenit, Tecnopuc and Tecnosinos) was created. The main goal of this alliance is to articulate high-impact initiatives and stakeholders in order to turn the city into a hub for new technology-based ventures and startups in the era of the digital economy, attracting new investments and developing talent. The union of the three universities aims to transform the region into an international reference in innovation, knowledge and entrepreneurship. The Alliance for Innovation was the spark for many other greater projects for the region, such as Pacto Alegre and INOVA RS. These initiatives are responsible for coordinating hundreds of entities and professionals that together identify challenges, analyse, and approve projects, both at municipal and regional level.

And that is the main reason for our slogan: Innovating together is what makes us grow stronger! Our goal is to build a strong ecosystem that enhances skills, based on values and purpose, and that attracts talent and business that contributes to a better future for all people, in an inclusive way and respecting the diversity that characterizes our region.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

The impact on the business world and labour relations arising from the pandemic period has pointed to the need for decision-making and action beyond a gradual evolutionary process. Today, Tecnopuc envisions new and enormous challenges and opportunities. The main one is related to the changing profile of established companies and the emergence of startups and spin-offs on the international scene. The opportunity that is envisioned is the potential for remote delivery of a value proposition in a hyperconnected world. Respond at the appropriate speed and dimension to the challenges and opportunities of the hybrid world is what Tecnopuc seeks to achieve with the new strategic intention of Tecnopuc Anywhere.
Through Tecnopuc Anywhere, the Park proposes to accelerate its expansion process by expanding its connection networks and number of companies. To this end, it plans to review its business model, developing a hybrid ecosystem, where the value proposition delivered in person at the Park is also represented in the digital world.
Tecnopuc Anywhere enables the development of this value proposal based on the specialization of operations in strategic markets national and internationally, focusing on attracting new business and investment for the Park and their companies.
